This has been an exciting week for Finn. He is getting stronger every day and also starting to be more vocal. He got to meet Ginger, our calico, last Friday. Ginger is a very mellow and tentative girl with a very gentle demeanor. We let her come in to Finn's room and she headed right for his food dish. Finn knew she was there because he was sniffing and moving his head to figure out where she was. He finally realized she was right near his bed and eating his food. He apparently had no objection to sharing his food and just settled down in his bed while she ate. As you can see, Ginger has an unusual limb deformity on her right rear leg. This doesn't slow her down at all. She climbs, jumps, and has been known to catch an occasional mouse in our basement. We will let Finn meet Ginger's brother, Fred, soon. Fred has deformed front legs - missing some bones and others are bent. Like Ginger, Fred doesn't know that he is handicapped. I suspect that Finn doesn't know he is a blind cat with deformed limbs. He only knows that he is a cat!
Finn is using his litter box without any accidents and is starting to groom himself regularly. This morning he spent quite a lot of time washing and getting ready for the day. When he first came to us, he had no strength for anything beyond eating and sleeping. I would pick him up and put him in the litter box and then put him near his food and water. Now he is navigating on his own and there is a noticeable improvement in his walking. Before he was creeping along the floor and now he is standing tall and strong (for Finn).
In just a few weeks, he should be strong enough for his surgery. Shortly after that, he should be ready for adoption. As much as we love him, we want him to have the best home. We already have a possible adopter who seems perfect for Finn's needs.

Hi Janette, lovely to see how well Finn is doing, enormous credit and thanks to you.
ReplyDeleteIf Finn leaves you will we lose the updates of his days?? That will be sad.
Your Ginger seems nice company for Finn, hope its as good with Fred.
Warm regards to all and head butts all round.

Hi David & Milady,
DeleteIt will be difficult to let Finn go. He will not be ready for a while. We are planning to bring him to an eye specialist in MA soon to see if anything can be done to restore some sight. He also will need to have his neutering surgery in about one month. If he does go to a forever home, it would be wonderful if we could continue to get updates on his progress. I will certainly keep everyone informed as the plans develop.

Hi Janette - so pleased to see another entry about Finn and to hear that he's getting stronger. That is so encouraging. Clearly, finding an appropriate home for Finn carries more difficulty than normal. Does POA follow up in some way after placement to be sure things are working out? I sincerely hope you are able to find the perfect place. He deserves it. I just made another small donation via the POA site. Thanks again for continuing his story. He has something special that has just really touched me. Keep up the good work. Finn is lucky to have you. Jeanie
ReplyDeleteHi Jeanie,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your interest in Finn and for your donation. POA has a very thorough screening process prior to approving any adoption. We encourage our adopters to keep us updated and many send pictures and updates regularly. We contact all of our adopters to check on how things are going with their new pet. I certainly plan to keep in touch with Finn's adopter when that time comes.

I am so happy to read this about Finn!
ReplyDeleteI am still interested in adopting him when he is ready.
I originally saw him on facebook when they were looking for a foster, and I cant THANK YOU enough for doing what you are for this precious boy. There is just something about him that I am drawn too (besides the point that he is a special needs orange cat and 2 of them currently own me and 1 of them is blind also.) I had the same feeling about a special needs orange male cat and he was located at Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. After I was cleared for my home inspection, it dawned on me, that I needed to get him to Minnesota (where I was living at the time). The next day after my inspection, Best Friends called me to say they were driving out many adoptable cats to our no-kill shelter in exchange for their harder to adopt cats and my cat could be on that transport. Needless to say, 4 days later I was anxiously awaiting his for his arrival!
Just like my cat from Best Friends…if it is meant to be it will be, the Universe will guide Finn and our family (2 adults, 1 small mellow dog and 5 cats) to be together.

Thanks so much! We are so busy at the shelter that I have fallen behind on my updates! He is thriving and still as sweet as ever.
